What Are Channel Lit Signs?

Channel lit signs, also known as LED illuminated channel signages, are made of plastic or metal and are used as exterior or interior signs for commercial or public buildings. They are usually internally illuminated.

There is also a type of non-illuminated channel letters, unlit 3-D letters also used on panels, called three-dimensional letters.

Channel letters can be any number, letter, logo, or character in a sign.

The main parts of the channel illuminated letters are the face, the return, the back, and the illuminated elements. The returns, or sides of the letters, are made of sheet metal.

The face and back are usually acrylic, but can also be aluminum, stainless steel, galvanized sheet, or non-existent. Because they are highly flexible, channeled text logos are available in a range of colors, fonts, and sizes.

Types of Channel Letter signs

Face-lit LED channel letters

Face-lit channel letters, also known as standard channel letters, front lit channel letters, and face illuminated letters, are manufactured LED channel letters with an illuminated acrylic finish and plastic decorative caps, typically made of metal as well acrylic. We can create letters of 12” and above.

Cut a flat piece of sheet metal, which will create the back of the letter and is the basis for the letter shape. Then form the sides of the grooved letters by bending a wide strip of metal around the metal back. The back is attached to the back to create the solid shape of the letters.

This letter is painted and fitted with an (LED) module. A translucent plastic face, usually a 3⁄16 inch thick acrylic sheet, is cut to fit the open side of the letter.

The effect of halo lighting allows for a variety of creative effects depending on the color, sheen, and texture of the building surface. Light-colored architectural surfaces with matte finishes produce the best halo effect; dark, mirror-like finishes are the worst.

This type of sign allows you to use different colors to show the contrast between the front and back lit in order to give a glow on the front and a halo effect on the back.

Side Lit Channel Letters

As the name implies, the side lit channel letters emit light from the side of the letter. The front, as well as the back, are usually made of metal, with the side lit portion being attached to acrylic and the interior being lit by an LED module.

The side lit channel letters are similar to the back lit channel letters in that they form a halo of light, giving them an elegant, high-end look.

Channel Lit Letter Fabrication Details

Before production begins, your text or logo area is too small to be properly manufactured using metal returns and may need to be changed.

Channel letters can be flush mounted (directly to the building façade), or they can be mounted on raceways or wire channels. Raceways are rectangular mounting structures that serve as both a receptacle for marking electronic components such as power supplies and as a mounting structure.

A raceway is also used as a mounting structure but usually contains only wiring. It is thinner and wider than a raceway and can also be used as a backplane for channel letter sets.
