White Channel Letters for Shop Front Sign Letters: Advantages and Limitations

How to Use White with Channel Letters

Are your customers considering using white faces for their channel lit letters? White has many advantages as a color, but it also has some limitations. Here are a few items to consider.

White is associated with light, innocence, and purity. It is sometimes referred to as the “perfect color”. Doctors wear white jackets to relate to these properties.

Of all the colors, white has the highest level of light reflection and can appear especially strong when placed on an exterior wall with which it is in marked contrast.

White has a good daytime contrast with these facade colors (and will be clearly visible)

White letters on these façade colors will not have a strong daytime contrast.

The two most popular white acrylic shades are Standard White (#7328) and Opal White (#2447). For nighttime visibility, Standard White is highly reflective and will have a bright appearance when illuminated by LEDs with a minimum of 6500 Kelvin.

Milky white (#2447) has the advantage of being more translucent than standard white, but slightly less reflective. It will also have a nice nighttime presence when illuminated by a 6500 kelvin (or higher) LED.

You can illuminate your letter signs in different ways: neon, internal LEDs, external LEDs, and external backlights with or without a backplate.

Different LEDs For Different Purposes

Each individual LED bulb is designed for a specific purpose. For example, an LED used for a flashlight is designed differently than an LED used for an electronic LED sign. One is designed to focus all the light directly in front of it, while the other spreads the light evenly in all forward directions.

Importantly, almost all of the LEDs are not designed to meet strict color matching. Most backlight LEDs are designed to illuminate colored plastic.

Did you know that LEDs that excel at the illuminated channel letters on plastic faces are not the best choice for illuminating slotted text or sign cabinets with translucent vinyl or digitally printed graphics on plastic or flexible sign faces; nor are they the best choice for illuminating the halo around the reverse slotted text.

The front of the letter is open or has a clear plastic face with exposed neon lights and the inside of the letter is painted in a reflective color to enhance illumination. This is an effective option that provides color changes from day to night. These types of letter signs are typically found in interior applications and restaurant branding signs.

Backlit or Reverse Halo Channel Letters

Backlit or reverse channel letters halo lit is a slightly more elegant way to use channel letters. The Process of Stainless Steel White Channel Letters

• 1. The metal sheet is cut by a computer-controlled laser machine based on vector design files(.cdr/.eps/.ai/.scv, etc), this creates the back case and trim border of the channel letters.
• 2. The returns are welded at trim by bending a 2-3 inch wide (50–80 mm) metal strip to form the 3D letter shape. The trim and returns can be painted colors based on PMS.
• 3. A translucent acrylic face is cut to fit inside the letter shape.
