The use of 304 in coastal areas may result in premature failure.

Cor-Ten – A weathering steel made from an alloy of copper, chromium, and nickel. The material forms its own protective layer when exposed to atmospheric elements. Essentially, the top layer corrodes and then protects the steel below it. The natural finish usually does not require any form of maintenance such as painting, making the material a very cost-effective alternative to other structural steel.

Finish Note: Brushed steel letters are particularly susceptible to collecting external contaminants and airborne pollutants from harsh environments. This is because the brushed stainless steel finish captures and retains residues that may contaminate the surface of the letters.

In many cases, we have seen customers believe that these residues are actually rust. In most non-marine situations, only the brushed stainless steel finish needs to be cleaned.

This is easy to do because stainless steel letters are shipped without a clear coat – so simply use a Scotch-Brite pad and a common stainless steel cleaner (such as Kleen King) to restore the letters to a “like new”

condition. In cases where actual oxidation (rusting) has occurred, this is because the stainless steel has been exposed to marine environments or harsh environments, such as near-treated chlorine pools or concentrated engine exhaust gases.

In these cases, 316 alloys are recommended for longer life, but clear coat protection may be required to further extend the life of the stainless steel. Remember – stainless steel is “less stained” not “unstained”.
