Halo Lit Channel Letters: A Guide to Illuminated Signage
Reverse or halo lit channel letters are very different from face lit letters. Many people find these to give a very elegant look. Reverse channel letters do not glow on the face because the face is made of metal and the light faces backward toward the wall.
This light “floods” the wall behind the letters so that the illumination emanates from the back and edges of the letters. This is also commonly referred to as the “halo” effect. The lighting remains inside the letters and can be neon or LED.
When selecting Channel Letters Wholesale, Halo Lit Letters are the first choice for clients who want an impactful, classy look for their Channel Letter Sign. We mount them away from the wall about a 2-3 inch distance so that the light forms a halo behind them, we often call them Reverse Channel Letter Signs or Backlit Channel Letters.
Create eye-catching halo lit effects with custom LED illuminated signs to create a unique, eye-catching look that enhances the perceived value of the sign and your business.
Sometimes referred to as “reverse lit channel letters,” our halo lit letters are expertly crafted using galvanized sheet metal, stainless steel, or other fine metals with a light accent. State-of-the-art manufacturing techniques and superior craftsmanship combine to produce the best halo illuminated signs in the industry.
Outdoor Backlit Signs have a metal face with returns instead of an acrylic one, the metal material including stainless steel, aluminum, and galvanized sheet.
As otherwise known, Backlit Logo Sign typically has clear acrylic backs. The distance that we mount letters from the building enables the halo of illumination around the individual letter, helping the Backlit Letters DIY to stand out.
During installation, the letters float off the wall with spacers – both indoors and outdoors – and the results are breathtaking. The light shines on the surface behind the letters, creating a halo effect.
Indoor lights are usually LEDs, which are not only bright and beautiful but also save money compared to other types of lighting with energy-efficient bulbs. LEDs (and halo colors) are usually white, but other colors can be used, depending on your organization’s branding.
Special Considerations for Halo Lit Letters Signs
When added to letters with non-illuminated surfaces, halo illumination brings clarity and definition to the letters. But because halo-lit letters and logos typically glow only around the edges, you should consider how the graphics will be seen when the logo is lit. Multicolor graphics on the face of letters and logos may require a combination of halo and face lighting.
When you consider using halo illuminated signs, you also need to consider the placement of custom signs. Because it casts light behind each letter, halo lit signage works best when mounted on a flat surface (usually the side of a building).
If circumstance dictates that you must affix the sign onto a wall that is not level, fear not, for we possess the ability to collaborate with you in crafting a backsplash that will serve as a smooth foundation for the illumination of the sign.
Furthermore, the chromatic and tactile qualities of the substrate upon which it is affixed can serve to influence the visual impact of your signage once it has been secured. Don’t forget to consider this when designing your custom halo lit letters sign.
Halo Lit Letters Signs Mounting and Installation
Before you choose a custom halo illuminated sign, keep in mind that you will need to install an electrical connector behind the wall or in the ceiling above.
Traditionally, halo illuminated signs are designed to be mounted directly on your storefront with wires going into the wall behind each letter. However, halo letters can also be mounted on a panel, which is a great solution when access to the wires is difficult or the wall is uneven. This way, you only need one electrical connector to make the connection.
Often, people think of halo-lit signs on the outside of buildings, but they are becoming more common as a signage solution for interior lobbies and meeting rooms. Think brand enhancement and name recall for your business when your interior signs are matched with exterior halo lighting products!
- Removable Cans: Standard Halo Lit cans are manufactured with a removable can holder. The face/cans can be removed by loosening the screw in the return. Stud with 1.5˝ standoffs.
- Removable studs (optional): Removable studs for servicing LEDs without visible large head screws. Contact us for a quote.
- Stud Mounting Drill Styles: Computer-generated letter trace with hand punched locations for studs, printed on yellow grid paper. Once taped to the wall, the hole locations are then filled with adhesive.
Halo Lit Letters Custom Cut and Painted In The Color Of Your Choice
LED Lights
A uniform cool white light (6500K) emanates from the back of these smooth halo lit letters signs. The solid 30 mm (1 inch) acrylic is custom cut and white LEDs are embedded in the plastic to create a beautifully illuminated sign with backlit letters. You can choose the color and font of the letters for the halo logo.
If a different glowing effect is desired, we have other LED light colors such as 3000K warm white, red, blue, and green. Custom colors and remote RGB lights are also available for an additional fee.
UL Listing, Electrical and Wire Information
By default, UL labels will be placed at the bottom of the letters. If you would like them placed elsewhere, please let us know. These are required for inspection.
By default, the lead will be placed in the center of the back of the letter. If you wish to place the leads elsewhere, please let us know. The standard lead is a 3-wire, 10-foot long cable. Calculated for your sign requirements for Class 2 power. Includes electrical information with wiring diagram and instructions.
The removable backside on each illuminated sign letter allows professionals to service LEDs and wiring. Flow holes and mounting holes are also cut into the back of the letters. We recommend hiring a licensed electrical contractor to perform the final installation.
Warranty Policy
3-years warranty on LED lights, 2-years warranty on the power supply
The letter height you order is based on the uppercase “A” in the font you specify. Depending on the font, some uppercase/lowercase letters may be shorter or taller than the height you specified on your order, so they appear proportional to each other.
As a result, you may receive some letters that are different in size than the height of the letters ordered. If all letters are sorted in lowercase, we still scale the letters to an uppercase “A”, which will make most letters smaller than the ordered letters. If you would like the font to be sized differently than our standard, please contact us.
Halo Lit Letters Signage With LED Mounting Direction, Light Diffusion, and Sign Mounting Distance
Halo-illuminated channel letters or reverse lighting has long been an elegant way to provide illuminated signage for that particular client.
However, combining LED lighting into these letter types has created a new need for designers to understand and re-evaluate the relationship between several factors here – letter shape, letter size, letter depth, and (especially) the amount of light coming out from behind.
The surface to which a set of halo-emitting channel letters are attached is also a key factor in achieving uniform illumination. This requires adding more factors to the discussion: What type of surface are the letters attached to? What does the surface look like? What is the distance between the letters and the mounting surface?
Have you ever walked through a shopping center, looked at its illuminated interior signage, and thought you had spotted a real service opportunity? Or have you ever noticed that the letters in an airport lobby don’t shine as brightly as they do in other places?
No real criticism here, but some newer glowing letter styles look just as good when the lighting is actually turned off.
Part of this can be attributed to the interior ambient lighting. To compensate, a glowing sign needs some additional lighting to help it compared to those letter sets mounted under the night sky.
This brings up one of the learning curve items that LED sign lighting has brought back to the sign industry. How much light is enough light? Or how well do reverse LED channel letters illuminate under these lighting conditions?
Unlike neon signs (a continuous light with illumination that radiates 360 degrees along the tube as the glass snakes uninterruptedly through the letterforms), LED lighting starts with a point source.
Therefore, to make this LED work in halo lighting applications, you need to look at direction, spread, and distance.
LED Module Mounting Orientation
In a halo application, you need to point the LED inward so that the light emanates from the back and reflects farther from the source to the surface.
Rule of thumb #1 is to start with plenty of light. For example, compare strip LED lighting inside a letter to a string of wired modules stuck to the back of the inside of a face.
Multiple rows of LED strips also give lighting a jolt compared to individually mounted strips. Strip lighting may not be the trick for exterior letters, but the tight continuous spacing of these LEDs will help smooth out the lighting. You still won’t get the same continuous light as you would with neon, but you will get a tighter light.
Some ribbon lighting systems have LEDs at a 90-degree angle to the back strip. The purpose is to direct the lighting parallel to the surface (i.e., the letters return). Point these same LEDs inward and paint the inside white (this is a plus when the letters don’t have a lot of depth).
Eliminating the need for glass tube holders, neon tubes and electrode housings makes it easier to create fine letters with LED lighting. When the direction is reflective, you don’t lose light.
LED Illumination Diffusion
A traditional halo option that helps diffuse LED lighting is a white polycarbonate backing. This is also an easy way to attach.
Think of this as reversing the channel letters. If you know the depth needed to make face-lit LED letters look beautiful (with smooth uniformity), simply flip them over. This style may require letters with thicker strokes, where the mount and LED module can be centered and the reflected light shoots backward along the perimeter.
Or, the design can be illuminated with what we affectionately call an “LED triple-head”. This type of sign lighting product combines multiple LEDs as a unified group (array module), producing an output that extends up to 180 degrees. (Note: This is not a bad result, but keep in mind that the neon light you are replacing and/or replicating is 360 degrees.)
Lensed LEDs with optics are another new solution for the sign industry. The lens above the diode receives the emitted light and changes the original beam, diffusing and diffusing the point source. This is built into the LED light control.
In some cases, the optics are created to project light over longer distances (as in the case of a long, narrow sign cabinet installation). In other designs, the lens is used to spread the light into the widest possible pattern.
In fact, lens technology from several suppliers has created LED sign lighting modules that work very well in letters as thin as 3 inches.
Distance of Sign Mounting From The Wall
Distance may be the way to create uniformity in LED lighting, as the light spills out moving letter by letter and hopefully around the mounting method. Further away, the glow will spread until it reaches the point of diminishing returns.
In general, the farther away from the background the signage is mounted, the wider and smoother the light band.
To try the distance, start with a sample letter on your workbench. Place it on top of a material that is comparable to the intended mounting position.
How does it look just sitting there? If there is a thin line around the lettering, pull it away from the surface to increase the distance to the surface.
This distance check also applies to testing the amount of light.
Use symmetrical letters, such as Helvetica bold “H”. Install different brands of LED modules on the back of each side and compare; you can even use different quantities for comparison. Some experimentation is a necessary part of the LED installation process, based on the type of product available only.
The correct distance for LED lighting with halo-emitting letters is still a big variable. You may find it beneficial to get closer to create a clear glow that utilizes the shape of the letters.
Keep in mind that the mounting of reflective letters needs to be considered differently. Simply mounting the letters away from the wall may interfere with the uniformity of the illumination coming from the back of the letters onto the wall behind them.
Acrylic letter backs with centrally located threaded stud mounts are the solution to many halo lighting problems. This type of fabrication and illumination has worked well with neon lights in the past.
Depending on the type of LED used, removable letters with a fixed back should make installation easier for the installer. Service will also be easier, even if marketers believe LED lighting has an extremely long life.
However, LED halo-illuminated letters with fully open backs and perimeter L-bracket brackets can create unwanted black spots (for neon and LEDs). Clear letter holder mounting systems are available, and they are an interesting attempt to eliminate false shadows while still providing an easy-to-install shape.
I hope my thoughts here will help you turn the idea upside down in terms of skilled channel letter lighting.
