Before you choose a backlit sign, keep in mind that you’ll need an electrical junction behind the wall or in the ceiling above power the sign. We will provide the power supply (transformer) needed to power the low voltage LEDs. Also, adequate access will be needed to the ceiling and wall to run the wiring. Backlighting adds a significant amount to the sign’s price and installation costs.

Based on different acrylic back-panel, we divided the LED backlit signs into two models:

Luxury model: Parts of the acrylic back-panel is exposed out of the 3D metal signs shell, this type of sign need not go off the wall, people can see the lighting from the visible acrylic back-panel directly. The brightness is very good and the halo effect is strong. Used for luxury brand store mostly.

Common model: The acrylic back-panel is in the 3D metal signs shell, be used to get the uniform lighting. The lighting must be reflected by the backing wall before it can be seen by people. Considering the reflectivity of the wall, the brightness of this model is good but poorer than the luxury model. Although the halo effect is still very beautiful, it is poorer than the luxury model too. This type of sign must be off the wall, we recommend the common model off the wall about 10mm~20mm(0.4”~0.8”) for the best halo effect.

Backlighting Requirements

While backlighting is a great way to help your sign stand out from the wall, especially in poorly lit areas, only certain signs with large enough letters or bold font may apply for illumination. Illuminated letters or symbols must allow enough space on the back to hide 1/2” wide LED strips without running into difficulty.

LED Backlighting Techniques

We have come up with various techniques that allow us to incorporate LED lights into just about any of our sign styles. From personal experience, the multi-layer signs work best and are the most impressive, oftentimes using a combination of artistic metal and colored acrylic layers to create some really neat light distribution. We can use LED lights on a flat or single-layer metal sign as well, however, you lose some of the lusters: you either get a halo effect around the outer edges of the sign, or we can add a frame around the edges and shine the lights in from the perimeter. Either way, if you are looking for custom light-up signs for a building, metal letters with lights for residential use, or any other lighted business signs, we will make sure to light up your brand in the best possible way!

How Backlit Logo Signs Work?

Backlighting requires a separate wire to supply power to each letter. This wire is pulled into the wall and connected either at the other side of the wall or in the ceiling. The wires are relatively thin and easily connected to a power adapter. The power adapter is similar to a phone charger that simply plugs into a regular 110v power outlet.

If dragging the cable into the other side of the wall or ceiling isn’t possible, you can also drag the wire near a socket on the same side of the wall. This allows you to hide the cables from running along the wall and closer to the power source. Once the individual wires for each letter are connected together, there is only one cable left to be plugged into the power adapter to plug it into an outlet.

Depending on how the wall is structured beneath the drywall, dragging the cables in this way may or may not be possible. It is important to check with building management or the construction company that constructed the space to see what type of structure lies hidden beneath the drywall. This will ensure a smooth final installation.

How To Make Custom Backlit Signage Letters

• 1. The metal sheet is cut by a computer-controlled laser machine based on vector design files(.cdr/.eps/.ai/.scv, etc), this creates the back case and trim border of the channel
• 2. The returns are welded at trim by bending a 2-3 inch wide (50–80 mm) metal strip to form the 3D letter shape. We can paint PMS colors on the trim and return.
• 3. A translucent acrylic face is cut to fit inside the letter shape.
• 4. Waterproof LED modules are installed on the back bottom case and screwed with the letter shape.
• 5. When illuminated at night, channel letters draw the eyes of passers-by.

Signs are all custom-made and can be any size you require. Because of the infinite possibility of sizes, we only list a few common sizes for general cost estimating.

Sign Style

• Square/Rectangle: These signs are made with the sign face being either a square or rectangle shape with 90-degree corners. Your logo will be positioned inside in whatever layout you request.
• Logo Outline: The face of these signs will mimic the shape of your logo or can be any other custom shape. A wine bottle with your logo inside it, for example.

Logo Color

• Full Color: Choose this option if your logo has colored details in it. Full-color logos are printed and require the sign face to be black.
• Two-Tone: Choose this option if you want the entire logo to light up the color of the LED lighting.

Sign Face Color

• Logos with full-color graphics are printed and can only be used with a black sign face.
• Two-Tone Logos are physically cut out of the face of the sign so they cannot have color-specific details although the face can still be black.

We recommend hiring a professional installer to finish the installation job. Because needing to use the stud blots to fix on the backing wall, will drill holes on the wall for the stud bolts and cables also need to connect cables, professional installers can make the signage have a much better final effect. Of course, if you have enough hands-on ability and are a licensed electrician, you can try to install it yourself.

The maintenance job is really simple. Only needs a soft cloth with seldom clean fresh water. It is not recommended to wipe with a cleaning solution containing alcohol or other organic ingredients to avoid damaging the outside of the shell, especially when the metal signs the shell’s surface be painted, powder-coated, or plated.

What power source do backlit signs need?

Backlit LED signs typically use a low voltage 12v power source. The amperage ranges between 5 – 15 amps. We offer a transformer that can be connected from 100v to 240v.

What if one of the LEDs burns out?

LED technology has come a very long way and we rarely see them burning out. If anything, over time, it’s usually the power adapter that needs to be replaced and this can be done very easily.

Would you recommend turning the sign off when I leave the office OR is it fine to keep it on continuously?

It is best practice to have your sign on a timer allowing it to turn off at night. Using a timer to strategically turn off the sign will greatly extend the life of your sign. Unless that is, you have exposure to walking traffic that will view the sign at off-hours. Even then, I would suggest setting it on a timer to turn off at times when it is least likely for anyone to be passing by.

How long will it take to install my backlit sign?

It really depends on the type of wall and how many individual letters and symbols there are in your sign. It usually takes between 1.5hr – 3 hours to install a backlit sign.

Can I install my Backlit sign on a shiny surface?

Although you can always install your sign onto a shiny surface, keep in mind the individual LED dots may show more. We suggest using a surface painted matte as the backdrop for backlit signs because it will help disperse the individual dots and provide an even glow effect.

How do the full-Color LEDs work?

Color LEDs are called RGB LEDs. They are called RGB because each LED light, instead of just one white LED, has three separate tiny bulbs for each color Red, Green, and Blue. A Bluetooth controller, in this case, an Android or iPhone app controls the intensity of each LED’s combination of Red, Green, and Blue which allows it to produce any color.
