What is A Channel Letter Sign?

Channel letter logos are three-dimensional graphic elements with separate structures and separate lighting. Simply put, channel letters can be any letter, number, or another character that, when combined with other similar characters, can form a symbolic representation.

Each letter is made of sheet metal and acrylic. Channel letter signs are very flexible and can be made using a variety of fonts, colors, and sizes.

How are Channel Letters Made?

Channel Letters consist of the following parts:

• Face: For standard or front-gloss channel letters, the face is made from a 3/16″ thick colorfast acrylic sheet, usually cut to shape using a CNC or multi-station router. The acrylic sheet is available in a variety of colors and can be customized to a wider range of available colors by using high-quality translucent or perforated vinyl from leading manufacturers, including 3M, Avery, and Oracal. The acrylic side of the fluted letters is attached to the fluted letter “cans” using “trim caps”.
• Trim Cap: The mechanism that attaches the acrylic fluted letter face to the fluted letter body is a UV-resistant, earth-friendly, highly durable plastic that is extruded around an aluminum foil. The trim cap is attached to the acrylic channel letter face using a liquid adhesive that “welds” the trim cap to the channel letter face. The face is then ready to be attached to the body of the channel letters.
• Return: The side of the channel letters is called the “return”. For standard headlight channel letters, the depth of the return is typically 3″, 5″ or 8″ and may be specified in the signing criteria of your rental agreement or local city/county ordinance. The returns are shaped into the proper features by using a computer-driven bending machine. The aluminum sheet used to fabricate the channel letters is also available in a variety of standard colors or can be custom painted using your choice of PMS or other color matching shades.
• Backside: The backside of channel letters are made of planned sheet metal and are available in a variety of thicknesses including 0.040, 0.063, and 0.090.
• Light source: Channel letters are available as both illuminated and non-illuminated sign options. Today, nearly all internally illuminated channel letters are made using LED lighting, providing significant energy cost savings compared to the neon lighting options commonly used in the past.

What Types of Channel Letter Signs Are Available?

Front Lit Channel Letters

The first and most common type of channel letter is the front-lit or standard channel letter sign. Front-illuminated channel letters will have an acrylic face, decorative cover, aluminum return, and aluminum back. Once again, the options are vast – these signs can be customized in a variety of ways!

Reverse Channel Letters / Backlit Channel Letters / Halo Channel Letters

For a unique and elegant look, consider reverse channel letters! Reverse channel letters feature a .090 metal face and .063 aluminum back instead of an acrylic face and have a clear 1/8″ or 3/16″ polycarbonate backing.

Reverse channel letters typically have smaller returns, usually about 3.5 in. These letters are mounted with 1.5-inch brackets, so that – when illuminated – a “halo effect” is created around the shape of each character.

Dual Lit or Front/Back lit Channel Letters

Ever wanted to make a logo with a red glowing surface and a blue halo effect? Well, the combination of lighted channel letters is for you! These signs use 3/16″ acrylic on the face and are mounted to the aluminum return with a decorative cap (usually about 5″).

Like the reverse channel letters, the front and back lit channel letters use a clear acrylic backing that has been customized using translucent vinyl graphics to create the desired halo color.

How Much Do Channel Letters Cost?

What Installation Options Are Available?

Raceway Installation

Many property management companies and landlords will require any access letter signs to be installed on the raceway, which is a metal “box” that holds the wires and power to the individual channel letters themselves.

The advantage of raceway mounted channel letters is that it reduces the number of wall penetrations required to complete the installation – something that most landlords appreciate. Raceways are often painted to match the color of the building’s exterior walls or signature strip.

Direct or Recessed Installation

If appearance is key, then you’ll likely prefer direct mount. With a direct mount, letters are attached directly to the building façade using patterns and non-corrosive fasteners.

For reverse channel letters, direct mounting using bracket spacers is a common choice. For direct mount or raceway mount channel letter signs, the power, and wiring to connect one letter to the other are located behind the bulkhead wall or façade.

Backsplash Mounting

Similar to duct mounting, with the difference that instead of a metal box, channel letters are attached to a metal cabinet or backboard that is typically larger in height and width than the channel letter configuration. Power and wiring can be installed in a back “cabinet” or behind a bulkhead wall or façade.

What Are The Considerations?

• 1. Before spending any time considering the various types of storefront or commercial sign options, check the requirements in your lease, local zoning classification (e.g., areas marked as historic districts), or local sign ordinance. Consult with the landlord/manager and carefully read the signing criteria in the lease agreement!
• 2. Think long-term about …… to purchase the best sign you can afford. Signs are not like printed media or direct mail. With signs, your upfront cost is higher, but the cost after installation of the sign (electrical and maintenance) is relatively low. A $3,500 channel letter sign costs less than $10 per day to advertise. Divide your sign cost by the number of days in your lease. 3.
• 3. It’s cheaper to buy a sign once. In other words, buy a sign you’ll be happy with next year and three years from now. Are you sure bright pink is the way you want it?
• 4. Don’t cut corners. Using low-quality LEDs means your sign won’t be as bright today and will be darker tomorrow. Using low-quality decorative caps means that the caps will break and the appearance of your sign’s surface will deteriorate. Using low-quality acrylic that is not color resistant means the red, blue, green, yellow, purple, or orange surface of your channel letter sign will fade faster than it should.
• 5. Check …… before placing your order Will your sign be UL approved? In many cases, your lease requires all signs to be UL-approved. Confirm all colors, including raceway colors (if applicable).
• 6. Sweat details. Don’t just compare prices. Compare the thickness of the acrylic used for the face to the thickness of the metal used for the return. What is the warranty on the power supply and what is the hourly life of the LED? Remember, it’s cheaper to maintain a good quality, well-made sign!

How Do You Make A Channel Letter?

• 1. The metal sheet is cut by a computer-controlled laser machine based on vector design files(.cdr/.eps/.ai/.scv, etc), this creates the back case and trim border of the channel letters.
• 2. The returns are welded at trim by bending a 2-3 inch wide (50–80 mm) metal strip to form the 3D letter shape. The trim and returns can be painted colors base on PMS.
