How To Backlight A Metal Sign?
Step 1: Backlit Sign Design
Use a vector file tool such as Adobe Illustrator or CDR to design the channel letter logo you need.
Step 2: Create the Backlit Sign panel
You can choose stainless steel or you can make the sign panel from aluminum and choose the color you need and finish it using spray paint or baking paint.
Step 3: Round the edges
Import the created design into the bending machine and use aluminum as the side edge of the backlit sign. The bending machine automatically completes the aluminum edge bending and sets it aside.
Step 3: Welding the panel
Using a welding machine, weld the panels to the side edges, sand and polish them, then spray them with the color you require and set them aside.
Step 4: Cutting the veneer and acrylic
Import the vector file of the finished design into the laser engraver and use the laser engraver to cut the lettering. Cut the veneer and acrylic quickly on the industrial laser and, when finished, use the sander to remove the burrs.
Step 5: Create the backplate
Use a metal backing plate to mount the LEDs and support the front of the sign. The backing is exactly the same shape and size as the acrylic. The acrylic needs to be supported by the backing plate, so the position near the outer edge of the veneer is used as a support screw. They will therefore be hidden under the veneer.
An opening was created for the power cable of the power supply. CNC cut off the backrest. Cut the support plate from the back so that I could add countersunk holes for the washers and nuts. Paint the front surface and sides white to provide a brighter surface for the LED reflections.
Step 6: Prepare the acrylic
Using the backing plate as a template, I drilled some holes in the acrylic for the screw supports. The front of the acrylic was countersunk for the flat head screws. The surface of the acrylic was sanded with 220 grit sandpaper. This will provide a good surface for the epoxy to adhere to. Make sure the screw heads are below the acrylic surface and epoxy over the screw heads and secure them in place with washers and nuts on the back.
A ½” nut was added from the end to act as a spacer for the support plate. A thread lock was placed on the threads to hold the nut in place.
Step 7: Installing the LED module
The LEDs were cut in the appropriate places and placed on the backplate. Mount the controller and power supply in a position on the backplate where they are not visible. Remove the adhesive backing from the LED strips and place them in their place. Pay attention to the orientation of the LED strips to ensure that the wiring is always correct.
The LEDs have 4 terminals on each strip (12v, G, R, B). Orient each strip so that the wires do not cross (12v, next to 12v, or B next to B).
After connecting each LED strip, power it up to ensure that all colors are working properly.
A spot was reserved for the controller and a 3D printed part was made to hold the remote sensor in place. Each solder joint on the LED strips was pre-tinned and the jumper wires were pre-tinned.
Step 8: Gluing the plywood to the back of the signage faceplate
Attach the plywood with the LED modules installed to the back of the face shield. The epoxy is not very sticky and takes about 4-8 hours to set up.
Step 9: Final Assembly
After mounting the LEDs in place and curing the epoxy, mount the veneer assembly to the backplate and attach the washers and nuts to the bracket screws. Tie the remote sensor in place. A 6″ French cleat was installed on the back for suspension. and a 1/8 in. thick pad was added to allow the use of the French cleat. The back panel has an opening for the power cord and the plan is to place a power outlet on the wall aligned with the hole. Start it up and enjoy the many colors.
Step 10: Conclusion
