Benefits of Metal Lettering Signs
Because of their potentially multi-dimensional appearance, and the way they can be designed to sit flush with or away from the wall, metal letters are particularly well suited to attract attention. Ideally, this means more business and more sales. The letters are also beneficial.
- Professional – Metal has a bold and sophisticated look that naturally appears high quality. Along with the smooth surface, metal letters can emphasize the professionalism of your company or the value of your building.
- Durable – Because they are made of metal, many of these letters are unaffected by weather conditions and breakage. Metal signs are durable enough to be used indoors and outdoors, depending on the type of metal and finish. When used indoors, they require minimal maintenance to keep them looking new.
- Customizable – The variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and finishes means that metal signs can be designed to match any decor or brand without affecting your budget.
- Despite their appearance, metal letters aren’t too expensive and the wide variety means there’s always one that’s within your budget. Metals like aluminum are actually cost-effective, and different finishes can be used to mimic higher grades of metal without the higher price tag.

Metal Letters For Walls
All of these types of materials can be used for both indoor and outdoor signage needs. We have some add-ons that businesses use to make their signs really stick out. You can have LED lights behind the letters that illuminate the wall and give a glowing effect. This backlighting is sometimes referred to as halo lighting. This is great at night so people can see your business sign from a distance and stick around at night.
If you don’t have lighting, your sign will become invisible outdoors when the sun goes down. Also, on each page, you can get a more in-depth feel for the pros and cons and pricing of each type of metal sign letter you might choose. Backlighting is the most common use of stainless steel letters made with metal. Backlighting can be used on both large and small metal letters.
When it comes time to place your order, just remember that each type of material may take longer to make the shipping time different. If you are a builder, this may come into play more. If you need an urgent delivery, please send us an email. We offer a variety of different fonts with an approximate length on the page, but we know that sometimes it’s a tight fit and you need to know the exact number. In that case, send us an email and we’ll give you those numbers.
In the mini letters section, we have aluminum, brass, and bronze. The height of these letters starts at ½ inch. Everything is the same except for the mounting. These are flat-backed and mounted using heavy-duty double-sided tape or 100% pure silicone.
We are here to help, if you want something but don’t see it on our website let us know. We can make any custom metal letters you are looking for. We are here to help you in any way possible. At IsLedSign, we hand to design and fabricate each sign, making almost any custom idea possible to become a reality. Our wall signs are made from high-quality metal materials and can be used in a variety of spaces. With our equipment, we can create any of the following wall signs
The thickness of the letters depends on the material chosen, and many are available in a variety of widths that best match the desired look and placement.
Options for Metal Letters Fonts
For our metal letter signs, we can cut each metal letter individually on a CNC router. This allows any font to be shaped precisely, even those with custom designs such as brand names or cursive fonts, so the options are endless. However, we also have standard fonts that are known to look crisp and professional when made in metal, for example.
We can also create luminous letters for an eye-catching effect. These can be made by installing LED lights behind each letter so that the light is reflected on the wall behind the text. We can also install lights on the front of the metal letters for a more classic look. Blue Dot Signs also offers a variety of interior color options for our metal signs.
While many of our signs are designed in traditional metal colors (brass, copper, aluminum, brushed bronze, etc.), with our Pantone color matching capabilities, we can also add custom shades to create a color palette that matches your company’s colors.
The look of metal wall letters can also be customized with different finish options. Most metals are available in a glossy or matte finish. Brushed letters have a soft, glowing look, while a shiny finish will reflect light and really stand out.
Ordering Metal Letters Signage
First of all, there are two different ways to do metal letters, all letters are cut and welded using solids except for casting aluminum. Basically cast aluminum just like its name is used in a mold so there is less flexibility when buying this type of letter but the positive is that you get a greater depth for the price of the letter.
Since it is made from a mold the letters are hollow. With all the other letter types, you have to pay based on the thickness as well as the height, but they are solid. One is no better than the other and is very durable.
The positive thing about using cut letters or welded letters is the flexibility to use any custom order, custom font, or logo you may need. Our letters come in large and small sizes and can be used as wall letters, either inside or outside.
We have different mounting options that will accommodate all types of surfaces. We have the ability to give you a modern or rustic look for decorative purposes. If you are using it for outdoor commercial signs, we have the ability to give you backlit LED lighting that really sticks around at night and provides a glow.
When ordering different letters you can get different finishes such as natural oxide polish and others for your sign. If you want something other than letters like a logo or anything else just call us or email us and we will get back to you with a quote within 24 hours.
Once you receive your letters check them to make sure there is no damage when shipping. Pull out the mounting pattern if you ordered one. This will be your guide when mounting where the bolts will go and make help make your sign even. With these heavy letters or numbers, we recommend that you hire someone who knows what they are doing or has installed these types of letters before.
You want to make sure they are installed correctly and don’t fall out. We recommend that you check with the insurance or building owner before you put up any signs, as there may be insurance requirements as well. If you are doing this strictly for interior decorating purposes, you may not need to contact the landlord or insurance, but be sure to find out first. Also, some signs require a permit, be sure to check with the town or city.

Have You Ever Wanted To Create A Custom Metal Sign?
Maybe you’re thinking about opening a new store or just looking for a way to give your home decor a personal touch. Whatever the reason, there are certain things you should keep in mind when designing your masterpiece.
To design and cut a metal sign, you need to meet certain specifications. Although the requirements and guidelines are very precise, they are easy to follow.
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to design a metal sign.
1. Start with the right file format
To cut your logo, it needs to be in a vector-based format. At IsLedSign, we accept .ai, .dwg and .dxf file types for cutting metal signs. Alternatively, you can request a quote using other vector files such as .pdf, .step, or .eps designs.
While your metal signs do not necessarily need to be designed in these formats, if you want to use laser cutting, they must be exported to these file formats. For example, if you have a file that is a raster image, you can always convert it.
2. Import or design your image from scratch
To create your metal signage, you can either import a 2D image or design the image directly in your CAD software. For example, Adobe Illustrator is typically used for 2D designs, but other design software includes AutoCAD and Fusion360. When designing your sign, keep in mind that anything that is opaque in color will be metal, and anything that is transparent will be cut out.
As you design, make sure there are no details that are too small to be cut out with a laser. Anything less than 1.5 times the thickness of the material will be too small. For example, if you were to cut on 0.25″ steel, a hole less than 0.375″ would be too small. In this steel pendant, you can see that the cut detail is quite small because the material is so thin.
3. Avoid any “orphan” shapes in the design process.
An orphan shape is a shape that is supposed to be part of a metal symbol but is not connected elsewhere. A common example of a nested shape is the space inside the letter “e”. If the letter “e” is cut, without modification, the small shape inside the letter will not be in the symbol: it is not connected to anywhere else.
To solve this problem, you need to create bridges. A bridge is a shape designed to connect a nested shape to the rest of the structure.
Basically, you need to remember that since this is cut on metal, anything that is not connected to the bulk of the symbol will simply fall out. You can modify your design to compensate for this.
4. Make sure the lines don’t intersect or cross
Intersecting lines can cause problems in the cutting process. You can check for intersecting lines by viewing the product as an outline.
One way to avoid intersecting lines is to combine all the elements in your file into one element to ensure that none of your designs are intersecting.
Likewise, you should make sure that all your elements are “closed” so that there are no breaks in the lines. The machine needs a complete outline. Imagine that the outline of your item is the cut that the machine will make.
5. Convert any text to an outline
In vector programs, the text is handled differently than standard images or shapes. This allows you to easily make on-the-fly changes to your text, but when it comes to laser cutting, your text needs to be converted to an outline (shape) before cutting the metalmark.
With most CAD software solutions (such as Adobe Illustrator), you can select your text, right-click, and select “Convert Text to Outline”.
For example, in this landscape architecture logo, all text elements will be converted to outlines.
6. Prepare your file for cutting
Here are three things you need to do to prepare your file for laser cutting
- Remove anything from the file that is not intended to be cut The file provided should be “clean” with only the exact design itself. Any cutting guidelines, borders, or instructions should be removed.
- Scale the artwork to size. Metal signs will be cut to the given artwork; if the current scale is 6″, it will be cut to 6″ unless additional instructions are provided.
- Only one sign will be included, even if you want to cut more than one sign. If you want multiple copies, please let us know and we will reproduce your design ourselves to save you money and materials. If you provide multiple copies, the cutting process will be less efficient.
Your final design should be the outline of the metal sign, cut exactly as you want it.
7. Decide how you want to cut your sign
There are several types of metal and metal thickness available to choose from. You can cut your sign in:
- 1095 high carbon steel A strong, brittle metal that is best used for cutting tools.
- 6061 Aluminum (Aerospace). Lightweight. Durable and beautiful to weld.
- Aluminum alloy. A lightweight, strong, versatile metal that is affordable and will not rust.
- Brass. Durable, brushed, yellow brass that is rustproof and beautiful.
- Cold Rolled Carbon Steel. Commercial-grade steel that is high quality and durable.
- Copper. Heavy, dense metal with high electrical conductivity.
- Stainless Steel. Rustic, weathered steel material with a unique appearance.
- Hot rolled carbon steel. A strong, durable metal with a slate gray finish.
- Stainless Steel. Bright, corrosion-resistant metal that is easy to weld.
- Titanium. Very strong and lightweight.
Different thicknesses can be chosen depending on the application of your signage and the design you want to cut.
8. Choose your polishing and buffing options
The finished metal sign may have some minor scratches from the cutting process. You can choose to polish them yourself or have them polished for you during the manufacturing process.
If you choose to have the polishing done for you, one of the following polishing options will be used.
Or, you can complete the polishing process yourself.
9. Get your quote
Once you have your design files on hand, please email them to us for a quote. The cost of your signage will be estimated based on the number of cuts you need, the metal you choose, and the thickness of the metal. The thicker the metal you choose, the more expensive your final sign will be, but it will also be more durable.
If you find that your design costs more to cut than you want, you can try reducing the “design density” of your file. Design density refers to the number of cuts the machine needs to make. The more cuts you make, the longer the design will take. If you simplify your design, you may be able to significantly reduce the cost of cutting metal signs.
While you can expect to pay a few thousand dollars for a traditional sign, a new LED digital sign will cost you at least $20,000 to $30,000. This means that price will likely be the biggest deciding factor in whether or not your church goes digital.
A shop sign can cost anywhere from $6/700 + VAT to over $3000 + VAT, depending on the materials and styles used. If your budget is higher than this cost then the sign will not be seen as expensive, likewise, if you have a lower budget then it will be seen as expensive.
